What Is RSI in Crypto?

The Relative Strength Index measures the balance of recent gains and losses on a scale from 0 to 100. It is useful for momentum context, but common 70 and 30 levels are not automatic trade signals.

Momentum scale

RSI describes momentum, not intrinsic value.

RSI rises when recent gains dominate and falls when recent losses dominate. The standard calculation commonly uses 14 candles.

Above 70

Strong or overbought momentum

Price may be extended, but strong trends can keep RSI elevated for longer than expected.

Below 30

Weak or oversold momentum

Price may be stretched lower, but bearish trends can keep RSI depressed.

Middle zones

Why RSI 40, 50, and 60 matter.

Momentum often behaves differently depending on trend direction. In a bullish structure, pullbacks may stabilize around the 40 area; in bearish structures, rallies may struggle near 60.

RSI zonePossible contextWhat to check
70–100Strong upside momentumExtension and trend strength
50–70Positive momentumWhether structure supports continuation
30–50Weakening or negative momentumWhether it is a pullback or breakdown
0–30Strong downside momentumCapitulation risk and trend direction
Divergence

RSI divergence is a warning, not a reversal guarantee.

Bullish divergence occurs when price makes a lower low while RSI makes a higher low. Bearish divergence is the opposite. Divergence can persist and should be confirmed by price structure.

Common mistake: buying only because RSI is below 30 or shorting only because it is above 70. Momentum extremes can persist in powerful trends.
JinnieMatrix use

How RSI fits into a pullback scanner.

A pullback framework can combine RSI with EMA structure instead of treating RSI alone as a signal.

Trend

Price above EMA200

Keeps the broader structural filter bullish.

Momentum

RSI cools into a defined range

Identifies reduced momentum after a stronger advance.

Validation

Compare timeframes

Checks whether the lower-timeframe pullback conflicts with broader conditions.
